Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 14/febrero/2006

Lo tratan IBA y Atlas Shrugs:

«An eye for an eye! A tooth for a tooth!» Echoing protests around the world and wearing all kinds of costumes from the Middle East and the Muslim world, 4,000 Islamic demonstrators march through Paris denouncing the cartoons and the alleged (and convenient) lack of respect towards Islam.

When they arrive at La Nation, they are met with two figures wearing slightly different costumes and slightly different signs.

One, in red and white, is (silently) wearing a sign with the Danish flag saying «Support Denmark, Support free speech». Besides (silently) wearing a sign reading «Free Cartoonist» on it, the other, the founder of the BAF protest warrior-type organisation, is holding a (fake) severed hand, a pen among its fingers.

Voices start to ring out. «It’s provocation!»

«You tread on 1.5 million Muslims!» «Connards!» «Rat faces!»

«Ignore them, they are idiots!» reply others as a crowd starts to press around. A rhetorical question rings out: «Would they be carrying out the same provocations in other types of demonstrations?!» (Actually, Monsieur, yes we would and yes we have.)

The Danish American feels like replying that they have done the same to Chirac, to Mitterrand, to the civil servant salons, and to union demonstrations, but suddenly he and the French American start moving away. What has happened is that a short blonde Frenchwoman has tugged on their sleeves and gently but firmly started pulling them away.

«I will show you my ID 10 meters from here» says the plainclothes cop. «They are going to lynch you!» she adds, as she leads us into another street (in the movie taken by our valiant camera team, you can briefly see her wearing a brown coat, right after a bearded guy in white cap and tan jacket says «They are provoking us» and the camera turns).

«Sons of adultery!» «Hey, you two sons of the whore!» Uniformed policemen join us and start rushing us, more and more quickly down the street (I don’t want to run, I tell them), with a growing crowd quickening their steps. A police van’s door opens. «Go! Go!» shouts a policeman to the driver, «Foncez!» as sirens wail and the van rushes ahead.

«Are you out of your minds?!» ask the two officers. «Do you know how many of them there were?!» «Somebody’s got to stand up for free speech», replies the French protestor. After staying with us for 20-something minutes, they let us out. (As a departing farewell, I say, «You know, right before you came, we almost had them surrounded.»)

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 14/febrero/2006

De IBA, artículo aparecido en Arab News:

«We have decided to work together to overcome the consequences of the present crisis,» said Solana. «The OIC is very close to our heart, the heart of Europeans. The reason for this visit is to show our respect for the OIC and through the organization respect for all the people represented by this organization.

«We feel a profound respect for the Islamic world, Islamic people and the Islamic countries. We never wanted to offend the feelings of the Muslims. This was not our intention, this has never been our intention nor will it be in the future.

«We are ready to devote as much time as is required to rebuild. We want to renew the dialogue … a dialogue that had never been cut off. We need good cooperation. We need to understand each other. We have values that we share, the value of tolerance. The Europeans need a solid relationship with you and, I think, you need a solid relationship with us,» said Solana.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 14/febrero/2006

De Atlas Shrugs:

ANKARA, Turkey Protesters shouting for «blood» and «vengeance» have targeted the French consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, as demonstrations continue over cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Some 150 ultra-nationalist Turks pelted the door of the consulate with eggs and tried to break into the building.

Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators rallied outside an Istanbul mosque to condemn the drawings, which first appeared in a Danish newspaper. The crowd shouted «Down with Israel, America and Denmark,» and waved banners calling for a boycott of Danish goods.

Other protests were held elsewhere in Turkey, and riot police stood by during a demonstration outside the embassy in Ankara.

Denmark has been sending warnings to its citizens as the controversy simmers across the Muslim world. In the latest move, officials are urging Danish citizens to leave Indonesia, saying it had information that Danes were at risk in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

Tens of thousands of Turks rallied on Sunday in protests against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, burning a Danish flag and throwing stones at a French consulate. In what appeared to be the largest such demonstration since the caricatures were first published in Denmark in September, 50,000 people amassed in the main square of the eastern city of Diyarbakir, shouting anti-Danish slogans. Before splitting up, demonstrators also called for a boycott of Danish products. In Istanbul, Turkey’s biggest city, about 150 people pelted the French consulate with stones and eggs, shouting «Allah is great» and «Revenge». Police stopped several demonstrators from climbing over the fence surrounding the consulate on the Istiklal pedestrian street in the European part of the city.

Another protest outside Beyazit Mosque drew about 4,000 people after prayers, with people shouting slogans hostile to Denmark, Israel and the United States and burning a Danish flag. French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo last week published the 12 caricatures portraying Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), first carried by Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September, which triggered violent protests across the Islamic world. Protests have taken place in several Turkish cities for the last days.

Atención al alianzador:

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week sent letters to world leaders urging reconciliation between East and West following Muslim anger over the cartoons. The drawings and their justification as freedom of expression amount to «cultural arrogance,» Erdogan said, while also condemning the violence that has marked the protests . Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union should be seen as a step towards achieving «unity and diversity» in the world, he said. Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country with a strictly secular system, sees itself as a bridge between East and West. afp

Reaction to the Cartoons Descends into Unintentional Self-Parody; now Muslims are complaining about a cartoon — about the cartoons…

«So I guess it’s not just that we aren’t supposed to draw pictures of Mohammed as terrorist, or of Mohammed at all; we aren’t even supposed to draw pictures that are obviously not of Mohammed, and that are meant to mock the inability to draw pictures of Mohammed.

(…)

«…it seems to me that this incident does plenty to illustrate the danger of the ‘it’s wrong to publish any cartoons that offend people’ attitude.»

  • Nick Cohen, The Observer explained: Why the Striking Bus Drivers in Tehran are the real defenders of Muslim rights.
For three weeks, there have been demonstrations across the planet about a great injustice done to Muslims. After baton-wielding cops inflicted dozens of injuries, the fear of death is in the air. George W Bush’s State Department has warned of ‘systematic oppression’, while secularists and fundamentalists have revealed their mutually incompatible values. Since you ask, I am not talking about the global menace of Scandinavian cartoonists that has so terrified our fearless free press, but mass arrests in Iran.

The media have barely mentioned the story, even though it cuts through the nonsense about a clash of civilisations between the ‘West’ and the ‘Muslims’. The Muslims of Tehran are proving themselves to be anything but a monolithic bloc happy to follow the orders of the ayatollahs and their demented President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There are huge class divisions to begin with, and close to the bottom of the heap are the city’s bus drivers.

The authorities refused to allow them an independent trade union and ruled that an ‘Islamic council’ in the offices of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company would represent their interests. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the pious have not proved the doughtiest fighters for better pay and conditions. The bus drivers claimed that managers were stealing money from their pay packets. They formed their own union and threatened to strike at the end of January. READ MORE

[…]Mahdiye Salimi, the 12-year-old daughter of one of the strike leaders, told a reporter that they had poured into her home in the early hours of the morning trying to find her father. When his wife said she didn’t know where he was, the assault began. ‘They kicked my mum’s heart with their boots and my mum had an enormous ache in her heart. They even wanted to spray something in my [two-year old] sister’s mouth.’

No one knows how many people the authorities arrested. The highest figure the British TUC has heard is 1,300. International trade union federations and the British embassy in Tehran estimate that somewhere between 400 and 600 people are still in prison.

  • The New York Times reported that Ahmadinejad in a speech to tens of thousands of demonstrators he said: «I ask our dear people to prepare themselves for a great struggle.» «Fasten your seat belts and pull up your sleeves.»
  • The Bangkok Post reported that he also told: «We ask the West to remove what they created sixty years ago [Israel] and if they do not listen to our recommendations, then the Palestinian nation and other nations will eventually do this for them,» Ahmadinejad said in a ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the Islamic revolution. «Do the removal of Israel before it is too late and save yourself from the fury of regional nations,» the ultra-conservative president said. He once again called the Holocaust a «fairy tale» and said Europeans have become hostages of «Zionists» in Israel….
  • Forbes reported that Iran rejected Condoleezza Rice’s charge of inflaming violence about the cartoons saying she should apologize.
  • Reuters reported that Iran’s Jews have sharply criticized President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust, saying his remarks have sparked fears.

  • Khaleej Times reported that the European Union condemned the latest remarks by Ahmadinejad about Israel, in which he said that the Palestinians and «other nations» would eventually remove the Jewish state.
  • Yahoo News reported that Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi, said: «The repressive actions of the Zionist regime against the Palestinians are worse than the Holocaust.»

  • CNN News reported that inspectors from the IAEA stripped most surveillance cameras and agency seals from Iranian nuclear sites and equipment as demanded by Tehran.
  • Nasdaq reported that France’s prime minister (Mr. de Villepin) said: Europe is still willing to negotiate with Iran if it suspends all sensitive nuclear activities, adding: This is not about starting a push for regime change in Iran.
  • Tehran Times reported that the second round of nuclear talks between Iran and Russia concerning a joint uranium enrichment project has been canceled.

  • The Jerusalem Post reported that US officials stationed in Baku said: «The Azeris in Iran could possibly lead a coup and assist in overthrowing the current regime there.»

  • Opinion Journal argued that a better response to Iran’s threats is to invite Israel into NATO.

  • Yahoo News reported that even former US vice president Al Gore lashed out at Iran’s clerical regime, denouncing it as a threat «for the future of the world.»

An American wanted for allegedly training with the «Lackawanna Six» at an al-Qaida camp was among the 23 men who tunneled out of a Yemeni prison last week, the FBI confirmed Friday.

Authorities earlier said they believed Jaber Elbaneh, 39, was probably among the escapees, but were not certain because of conflicting information, including a posting by the international police organization Interpol that pictured Elbaneh but described someone else.

Elbaneh is charged in Buffalo with providing material support to al-Qaida by attending the al-Farooq training camp run by Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan months before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Six other men who attended the camp – dubbed the Lackawanna Six after the city near Buffalo where they lived – are serving sentences ranging from seven to 10 years after pleading guilty in 2003 to providing support to a terrorist organization.

Authorities believe Elbaneh surrendered to Yemen authorities in December 2003. The United States had asked Yemen to hand him over, but had not received an official response.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 14/febrero/2006

Lo leo en Christian Persecution:

GUSAU, Nigeria, January 31 (Compass) — ‘For your information, the state Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Sani, has ordered that your church should be demolished before his arrival in this town tomorrow. So, we shall carry out this directive tomorrow morning.’

On October 10, 2003, the Rev. Seth Saleh, then pastor of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Bakura town in Zamfara state, received a Bakura town councilor as an unexpected guest in his house with the above message. The following day, the local government demolished St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

The demolition of that church in Bakura marked the beginning of an assault by Islamic fundamentalists in Zamfara under the leadership of Gov. Sani through imposition of sharia (Islamic law). In Gusau town alone, 14 churches have been marked out for demolition.

[…]The government demolished Rev. Obi’s Channel of Blessings church in 1997, and it has marked his rebuilt church for destruction as well.

‘We have been served with demolition notices and even then, there have been announcements over the radio and television on the churches to be demolished,’ Rev. Obi lamented. ‘It is just a matter of time, and these churches will be no more.’

Champion of Jihad

John Garba Danbinta, Anglican bishop of Gusau, said the demolition of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Bakura came on Gov. Sani’s orders.

‘The governor is from Bakura, and because he is the champion of Islamic jihad in Nigeria, he felt it will be unwise for a church to be seen in his hometown,’ Bishop Dabinta said.

The bishop pointed out these arbitrary demolitions to refute those in Nigeria who declare Christians face no opposition from the state.

‘The news outside Zamfara state is that everything is okay with Christians here,’ he said. ‘Some claim that the governor is good and treating Christians well, that Christians do not have problems, but this is false. The problem of persecution of Christians here is a reality. It is a major problem facing us today in Zamfara state.’

St. Peter’s Rev. Saleh, now pastor at St. John’s Anglican Church in Kaura Namoda, recalled how officials often had promised that sharia would only be applied to Muslims. Sharia had long been in effect in civil matters, as in all of Nigeria, but its imposition in criminal matters in 12 northern states has thrown the country into a constitutional crisis.

‘When sharia was introduced by the government of Zamfara state, we were told that it is meant to guide Muslims in their faith and that it has nothing to do with us Christians,’ Rev. Saleh said. ‘Surprisingly, sharia is now a weapon being used against the church in Zamfara state.’

Killing Infidels

Sharia as a weapon has been particularly sharp on Kabiru Lawal, a former Muslim who four months ago received Christ. The Hisbah Commission, Zamfara state’s agency for the enforcement of the sharia, is gunning for his life.

In late December and early January, agents of Hisbah invaded the Lawal family’s house three times looking for the 29-year-old man. Agents told family members that whenever Lawal is found, he should be prepared to pay the supreme price of abandoning Islam – death.

Each time the Hisbah arrived, Lawal was at the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau town due to illness.

He is now in hiding, no longer free to walk the streets of Gusau. His father, Mallam Lawal, comes from a family of Islamic clerics.

In 2002, Lawal read in the Quran about the second coming of Jesus into the world. Lawal, who holds a diploma in business administration from Kaduna Polytechnic in northern Nigeria, said his decision to investigate the life of Christ was informed by his desire to know whether «Jesus was coming as a Muslim or a Christian.»

Tunde Adebayo, a relative, gave Lawal a pocket size New Testament in 2003, which he hungrily read.

[…]His family stiffly opposes his conversion, but Lawal said there is no returning to Islam.

«Nothing on earth will make me turn away from Christ,» he said, «not even if I will be slaughtered like a ram.»

Draconian Decrees

Since the introduction of the sharia in January 2000, Zamfara authorities have banned Christians from sharing their faith or building churches, said Anglican Bishop Danbinta.

Officials are keeping Christians from building churches, he said, by making it impossible for them to acquire land. […]There are about 4,000 Anglicans in Zamfara, yet Bishop Danbinta said that in almost all parts of the state the government has refused to allow the church land to build places of worship.

«Sharia, it would seem, is being implemented to curtail Christianity, since it is only targeted at Christians,» he said.

70 Mosques, 0 Churches

When worldwide Muslim fury over cartoons of the Prophet spread to Britain, the flag-burning protests outside the Danish embassy in London appeared to be an entirely spontaneous outpouring of anger.

Inquiries by the Guardian have shown, however, that a key role in organising the demonstration was played by an Islamist sect whose supporters have repeatedly been linked to violence and terrorism.

Al-Ghurabaa, the organisation which takes credit for the protest, is essentially the same organisation as al-Muhajiroun, a sect which claims to have disbanded more than a year ago and whose founder, Omar Bakri Mohammed, was excluded from the UK last summer, shortly after he fled to Beirut.

They are uniquely British organisations which share the same leadership and same incendiary rhetoric. Their websites appear to be registered to the same house in north London. They hold an identical allure for a small but bitterly disaffected group of young British Muslims. And their members say they owe allegiance to the same «spiritual leader»: Bakri. The organisation may be banned, under both its guises, after the terrorism bill reaches its final stage in the Commons on Wednesday. Already, however, there is evidence that supporters of al-Ghurabaa – which means the strangers – are reorganising themselves under several new names, such as al-Firqat un-Naajiyah and Ahl al Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah: the Saved Sect, and the Messenger and his Companions.

Asked yesterday what the group would do if banned, Anjem Choudary, Bakri’s right-hand man, said: «It may push a lot of people underground, and that is something the government should be concerned about.»

Al-Ghurabaa, like al-Muhajiroun, makes no secret of its adoration of Osama bin Laden, and both are openly homophobic. Its website also espouses the murder of any who insult the Prophet.

In the wake of the Danish embassy demonstrations, al-Ghurabaa’s website was offering a series of articles and essays, some harmless, others bizarre, and a few which will be seen as offensive….

Another, headlined the Lion Roars Again, hails Osama bin Laden as a man of «honour and dignity», whose roar causes the US to «shiver with fear and panic».

An essay about the cartoons was entitled Kill Those Who Insult Muhammad. Others were entitled There is No Room for Homosexuality in Islam, Homosexual Today Paedophile Tomorrow, and Homosexuality: A Crime….

Ejem…
