Los musulmanes moderados daneses y la caricaturas

Finally, some good news from Denmark:

Dozens of Danish Muslims are joining the network of moderate Muslims, the Demokratiske Muslimer (Democratic Muslims). About 700 Muslims have already become DM members and 2,500 Danes have expressed their will to support the network. The initiative has caused anger among the Danish imams and their leader, Ahmad Abu Laban, who have referred to the moderates as “rats.” The imams feel that they are beginning to lose their control over part of the Muslim population.

Hehehe…

[...]Mr Tahmasebi is one of the people involvedin the newly established network of moderate Muslims in Denmark led by Naser Khader, a member of the Danish Parliament. He says he is well aware of the risk he is taking by siding with Mr Khader, who has for a long time been living under police protection. But Mr Tahmasebi feels it is his duty to take part in this debate. “Naser Khader has carried this responsibility for too long. I share his beliefs and now I want to stand up and say so. Apart from that, as a parent I feel a responsibility to fight, so that my children will not have to live under Islamist dogmas. They shall be able to live free in this country.” Mr Tahmasebi adds that he believes the imams are one of the biggest problems Denmark is facing today.(Via The Egyptian Sandmonkey)

Algunos apuntes sobre Abu Laban

Here are a couple of tid bits of interest on the Danish Imam accused of travelling the world to stir up trouble for his host country.

From a 2002 report on anti-semitism in Denmark:
On 5 April Palestinian imam Ahmad Abu Laban called on his congregation at Friday prayers to offer their lives in a jihad for the Palestinian cause. Outside the mosque buses were waiting to take the congregants to a demonstration at Parliament Square, where they held up signs equating Judaism with Nazism, brandished a gun and burned the Israeli flag. [...]

From a 2005 report:
…Danish-Muslim reaction to the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh sent shock waves throughout Danish society. A group of young Muslim women, among them the daughter of fundamentalist Imam Abu Laban (see ASW 2002/3), was shown on television laughing. The women stated that Van Gogh had gotten what he deserved since he ought to have known what sort of response his provocation would receive. Other spokesmen for Danish Muslims agreed and a debate ensued on whether freedom of speech should be limited by law so that statements offensive to Muslims would become illegal

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

A Muslim leader of a Michigan mosque with links to a man who taught confessed shoe-bomber Richard Reid at the Finsbury Park Mosque, has called for the “physical death” of those who “defile” the Prophet Mohamed and other Prophets of Islam, describing it as “blasphemy”.

Hanafi Abdul-Malik, Imam of the downtown Flint Michigan mosque Muslim House made the statements to a reporter for the Flint Journal.

The article in the Journal quotes Abdul-Malik as saying:

“Muslims respect God and all his prophets,” Adbul-Malik said. “We would not bring harm to any of them.”

“For anyone to defile any of them as has been done to the prophet Muhammad is blasphemy,” he said. “We think the consequence for doing so is physical death.”

By checking with our network watchers and double-checking with Nexis, ABC, CBS, and NBC have all completely ignored Al Gore’s speech in Saudi Arabia, where he denounced the U.S. government for committing “terrible abuses” against Arabs after 9/11, and that Arabs had been “indiscriminately rounded up” and held in “unforgivable” conditions.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

A JMCC poll shows that 56.2% of Palestinians support suicide bombing operations against Israeli civilians (including women and children). LGF rightly points out that the poll “…….shows that over 80% either support or only mildly oppose suicide bombings against Israeli civilians.” Mildly oppose means willing to tolerate. Via LGF.

Q18. How do you feel towards suicide bombing operations against Israeli civilians? Do you support them, or oppose them?
Strongly support 22.4
Somewhat support 33.8
Somewhat oppose 24.3
Strongly oppose 16.4
No answer 3.1

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

Sweden’s state-run aid group on Monday pledged more than five million euros in additional aid to the Palestinian territories as Israel and the United States halted much of their funding following Hamas’s election victory.

“The humanitarian situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has worsened,” the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) said in a statement, adding that it would provide 50 million kronor (6.4 million dollars) to the United Nations’ aid programs there.

In 2005, SIDA donated nearly 100 million kronor to the Palestinian territories, a spokesman for the group told AFP.

The additional aid was necessary since Israel was not living up to its responsibility as an occupying power, Peter Lundberg of SIDA’s humanitarian unit said in a statement.

“According to the fourth Geneva convention, the occupying power has a particular responsibility to support and ensure the human dignity of the occupied,” he said.

“Since Israel is not living up to its responsibility under international law, large parts of the Palestinian population are now completely dependent on international humanitarian aid,” Lundberg added. (Via Free Thoughts)

UN Middle East Envoy Alveran de Soto blasted Israel’s decision not to transfer funds to the Palestinian Authority following the induction of the new Hamas-led Parliament.

In his statement on Monday, De Soto called the steps “futile” and “haphazard” adding, “The funds belong to the Palestinians and it is illegal to block them.”

Israel has been collecting monthly tax and customs receipts and giving these funds to the Palestinians, on condition that the Palestinians abide by specific agreements — agreements which they have now abrogated:
The transfer of the money, which has been routine, is part of the accords signed between Israel and the PA [Palestinian Authority], part of the Oslo Agreement and the Paris Protocol,” said [Israeli spokesman] Mark Regev. “Now Hamas, the new incoming leadership on the Palestinian side, say they reject all those agreements – from their point of view those agreements are null and void. So they cannot have it both ways. They cannot say they are against all these agreements and then, at the same time, expect Israel to keep the part of the agreement they want, which is the transfer of funds.”

[...] the main objective of my writing today, is to nail the lie that to reject Zionism as it practised today is in effect to be anti-semitic, to be an inheritor of Hitler’s racism. That argument, with the Holocaust in the background, is nothing other than moral blackmail. It is highly effective. It condemns many to silence who fear to be thought anti-semitic. They are often the very opposite. They are often people whose heart bleeds at Israel’s betrayal of its true heritage.

I began with the recognition that the cancer of anti-semitism has not been cured. Tragically, Israel’s policies feed it – and when world Jewry defends Israeli policies right or wrong, then anger turns not only against Israel, but against all Jews. I wish it were mere rhetoric to say that Israeli politics today make a holocaust the day after tomorrow credible. If the whole Muslim world hates Israel, that is no idle speculation. To count on Arab disunity and Muslim sectarian conflict and a permanent American shield is no recipe for long-term security. (via Free Thoughts)

¿The Guardian?

In November 2004 an editorial in the Guardian (where else?) made the helpful suggestion that sharia could be spun as “Muslim family law” to make it more acceptable to the wider British public. “Muslim family law” – I can already hear the phrase tripping off the tongues of Labour ministers.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

In the tape posted to the Web site Monday, bin Laden offered the United States a long-term truce but also said his al-Qaida terror network would soon launch a fresh attack on American soil. The tape was initially broadcast Jan. 19 on Al-Jazeera, the pan-Arab satellite channel.

I have sworn to only live free. Even if I find bitter the taste of death, I don’t want to die humiliated or deceived,” bin Laden said, in the 11-minute, 26-second tape.

“The jihad (holy war) is ongoing, thank God, despite all the oppressive measures adopted by the U.S. Army and its agents (which has reached) a point where there is no difference between this criminality and Saddam’s criminality.”

Exiled Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden is seen in this April 1998 picture in Afghanistan. American officials said they are looking at Bin Laden for involvement in the Friday, Aug. 7, 1998 Kenyan and Tanzanian U.S. embassy explosions. He has threatened a holy war against U.S. troops and Americans, and is suspected of backing other terrorist acts, including the 1996 attack in Saudi Arabia. (AP Photo)

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

Me entero a través de CUSTOS FIDEI:

The European parliament has condemned the slaying of Catholic priest Father Andrea Santoro in Turkey.

It’s nice to see that the European Union (EU) show some dignity in respect to the slain missionary. Usually I cannot say much of anything positive about the European Union, nor Turkey for that matter, but it’s good to see that they do care for their own.

For more on this short article click here.

“Within the resolution is contained an explicit condemnation of the assassination of Father Santoro, and a strong calling to local, political and religious leaders to put an end to the acts of violence,” said Mario Mauro, vice president of the European Parliament, in a statement.

[...]The resolution further mentioned that “many of the countries in which there have been acts of violence and demonstrations protesting the cartoons, are countries in which the freedom of expression, speech, and the freedom of assembly are routinely violated.”

I see that Ezra Levant has decided to publish the cartoons in the upcoming Western Standard issue. And is already facing the howls of outrage from the usual groups, let’s get things in perspective here.

1. If your the kind who defended other publications of mocking Christianity, Judaism or any other organized religion, your in no position to condemn a publication that ridicules Islam. Your either for freedom of the press, satire and free speech or you believe that some control to those rights should be in order. Its that simple.

2. To use the excuse that this would spur a violent reaction and therefore should be stopped is also a dumb condemnation of the Western Standard. What your implying is that all I or any other group that decides some content in the media is insulting towards our beliefs have to do to bring about some control of the press is to protest like a bunch of deranged monkeys, burning, killing and pillaging anything in sight and you would come to our aid and demand that the content should never have been published. In other words, your allowing the intimidation of free speech to take hold.

3.Why hasn’t anyone asked themselves why don’t western Muslims become equally as vigilant when cartoons in the Muslim world publish cartoons that are anti-Semitic and bigoted in nature? Why are angered by ridicule done against them, while silent against their own kind who ridicule others?

4. If Middle Eastern dictators are able to crush large protests against their rule, why couldn’t they use that force to prevent the torching of Foreign Embassies that were under their security obligation? Simply re-enforces the nation that some Middle Eastern countries helped fuel the incidents.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 23/febrero/2006

THE PHOENIX is Boston’s leading “alternative” newspaper, the kind of brash, pull-no-punches weekly that might have been expected to print without hesitation the Mohammed cartoons that Islamists have been using to incite rage and riots across the Muslim world. Its willingness to push the envelope was memorably demonstrated in 2002, when it broke with most media to publish a grisly photograph of Daniel Pearl’s severed head, and supplied a link on its website to the sickening video of the Wall Street Journal reporter’s beheading.

”Our primary reason,” the editors confessed, is ”fear of retaliation from . . . bloodthirsty Islamists who seek to impose their will on those who do not believe as they do . . . Simply stated, we are being terrorized, and . . . could not in good conscience place the men and women who work at the Phoenix and its related companies in physical jeopardy. As we feel forced, literally, to bend to maniacal pressure, this may be the darkest moment in our 40-year-publishing history.”

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 22/febrero/2006

Lo leo en Ace of Spades:

And, gee whiz, it seems there were such reactions. A warning of likely consequences? Or a naked threat? And– is there really much of a distinction anymore, when those doing the warning are also the same doing the incitement to violence?

Nice civilization you have here. It’d be a shame if anything were to happen to it.

That was the sinister subtext of a letter addressed to Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, asking him to “take all those responsible to task under law” for the infamous Mohammed cartoons. The letter is remarkable for when it was sent and for who sent it.

The letter was signed by the eleven ambassadors of Islamic or heavily-Islamic countries. Libya, Algeria, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Palestine, Indonesia, Morocco, and Bosnia-Herzegovina complained about the Jyllands-Posten cartoons on October 12, long before the current round of protests.

The surprise is the implied extortion at the end of this paragraph:

We strongly feel that casting aspersions on Islam as a religion and publishing demeaning caricatures of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) goes against the spirit of Danish values of tolerance and civil society. This is on the whole a very discriminatory tendency and does not bode well with [sic] the high human rights standards of Denmark. We may underline that it can also cause reactions in Muslim countries and among Muslim communities in Europe“.

“Reactions?” Whatever could they mean by that?

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israel’s Foreign Ministry is distributing a documents linking Hamas to the Chechen terrorists. The Hamas brochures include recruiting posters that glorify the “resistance” of Afghanistan, Chechnya, Palestine and other Muslim regions against the “invaders”. In a recruiting CD titled “Russian Hell”, a Hamas speaker praises the great achievements of the terrorists in Chechnya and urges young Muslims to join the jihad against the Russian police and military forces. Other videos distributed by Hamas show 18 year old Russian soldiers being tortured, beheaded, and crucified. The package released by the Israelis also includes posters of terror kingpins Shamil Basayev and the recently killed Arab jihadist al-Khattab. Basayev has boasted about planning the Beslan school massacre of 350 children, and is still at large.

El presidente de Canadá y las caricaturas

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 21/febrero/2006

Así que pide perdón por las caricaturas:

“‘I regret the publication of this material in several media outlets,’ Harper said in a news release.

“‘While we understand this issue is divisive, our government wishes that people be respectful of the beliefs of others. I commend the Canadian Muslim community for voicing its opinion peacefully, respectfully and democratically.'”

Los musulmanes se lo agradecen:

Group spokeswoman Tyseer Aboulnasr praised Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay for emphasizing responsible expression while condemning the violent reaction to the cartoons in other countries.’ In other words: good dhimmi! You have voluntarily come out against freedom of speech! Violence wasn’t even necessary.

“Also, why are the groups involved not named in this article…?”

New poll of Canadian journalists from COMPAS: “Want media to carry [the cartoons]; a mix of respect and fear explains non-publication; non-publication plays into the hands of Muslim extremists.”

Más sobre la muerte de Ilan Halimi (2)

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 21/febrero/2006

De An Unsealed Room:

Justice Minister Pascal Clement, speaking to reporters outside an annual meeting of France’s main Jewish umbrella group, CRIF, confirmed investigators had alleged “aggravated circumstances of anti-Semitism.”

On Saturday, Halimi’s mother accused police of ignoring the anti-Semitic motivation in the case in order not to alienate Muslims in an interview to Haaretz.

Sebastian Sellam, 23, was a popular disc jockey at a hot Parisian night club called Queen. At about 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday November 19, the young man known as DJ Lam C (a reverse play on his surname) left the apartment he shared with his parents in a modest building in of Paris’ 10th arrondissement near la Place Colonel Fabien, heading to work as usual. In the underground parking lot, a Muslim neighbor slit Sellam’s throat twice, according to the Rosenpress interview. His face was completely mutilated with a fork. Even his eyes were gouged out.

Following the crime, Rosenpress correspondent Alain Azria reported, Sellam’s mother said the Muslim perpetrator mounted the stairs, his hands still bloody, and announced his crime. “I have killed my Jew. I will go to heaven,” he reportedly said. The alleged murderer’s family was well known for rabid anti-Semitism, Mrs. Sellam reportedly told Rosenpress, a point confirmed by the victim’s brother.

Liberation tonight carries a story that a French minister and the investigating magistrate in charge of the case are ready to admit that anti-semitism could have been part of the reason for the kidnapping and vicious torture and murder of the young Parisian Jew Ilan Halimi.

[...]But we’re a long way from being close to a likelihood of a conviction for a racist murder. Because, according to my reading of the Liberation report, the presence of an element of racism in the case would not be enough to secure a conviction on that basis.

It seems that only applies where the whole crime from beginning to end has a racist motive.

And Liberation suggests that the racist motive identified by the examining magistrate could be ruled out further on if there isn’t conclusive enough evidence.

Funny, none of these comments mentioned the possibly Islamist and unrelated-to-crime matter of the criminals citing Koranic verses in the course of their phone conversations with the Halimi family.

Its headline “Jewish anger at “racist” murder by kidnap gang” manages both to suggest that only Jews are angry at the brutal kidnap, long weeks of torture and ultimate murder of the young Parisian Jew, and that the racism is only suggested.

One of the suspects in custody declared, “I attacked him because he was a Jew, and the Jews are rich”. French authorities have no other choice than to pull their heads out the sand their asses and confront the anti-Semitic nature of the crime. The ringleader is believed to have fled to the Ivory Coast. The MRAP (France’s local version of the NAACP) claims that suburban kids, as a population, are being given a bad rap.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 21/febrero/2006

De Real Instituto Elcano (English version here):

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 21/febrero/2006

(Tomado de NO PASARÁN):

The Danish blog Agora has translated articles from Jyllands-Posten which definitely of interest to those of us who slept through Danish class in school.

Addressed to the Indonesian President, Per Nyholm (who authored the “We are being pissed upon” article) takes Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono up on his word. The BBC fawns over Yudhoyono, probably because he talks the right talk when prompted to stroke their lefty sensibilities when it comes to “tolerance” and “diversity”, but does a U-turn with any other audience.

«You complain, Mr. President – with no small justification – about the Islamophobia of The West. In connection with that, some have complained of a drawing of Muhammad with a bomb-like turban as being the most offensive. Very well, what do you think hurts Islam the most? The cartoon or this: that millions of viewers watch crazed and savage madmen decapitate their victims with knives or slaughter thousands of innocents, Moslems included, from New York to Iraq and Bali?»

Read it all. Also take a look at the Nyholm’s view of what he sees when he looks into the mind of those in that culture of complaint, and finds something familiar to Danish history:

«Both Munch and Scavenius preferred not to hear about concentration camps or the mass murder of Jews and Hitler’s political adversaries. They would much rather hear about amazing German triumphs, of the German economic miracle and of new autobahns.»

The angry mob said that a Christian boy had desecrated a copy of the Koran:

Protesters ransacked two churches in the city, Salahuddin Haider, the Sindh government spokesman, told AFP. “They were trying to burn the churches but police dispersed the crowd,” he added. Haider said that trouble began after accusations were made that a Christian teenager had thrown pages of the Holy Quran in a dustbin. Protesters blocked roads by burning tyres, he said, adding that paramilitary troops had been called.

AP Adds: One man was injured when police fired tear gas to disperse around 400 people who attacked the church, said Akbar Arain, the local police chief. Arain did not say what injuries the man suffered or how serious they are. There were no worshippers in the church and a private security guard fled the building when it was attacked, said Aftab Hale Pota, chief of Sukkur district police.

SM Wajih adds: Police resorted to teargas and aerial firing to disperse a mob, which forced traders to shut down shops, following reports of alleged ‘desecration’ of a copy of the Holy Quran by a Christian man from Freek Hill in the C Section Police precincts in Sukkur on Sunday. More than 100 people were arrested on charges of damaging public property, including a church and schools. Later, Rangers were called in who help bring the situation under control.

The Pakistani Chrisitian says that the two churches were set on fire and that Christians were beaten all in the presence of police.

A Pakistani Christian removes damaged furniture from a ransacked church in Sukkur, 480 km (300 miles) from Karachi, February 20, 2006. Police have charged 23 people with setting fire to two Christian churches during protests in southern Pakistan over desecration of the Muslim holy book, the Koran. (REUTERS/Mohammad Ali)

All Pakistan Minorities Alliance Chairman Shahbaz Bhatti said that besides the attacks on St Xavier Church and St Mary’s Catholic Church, the mobs have ransacked pastoral residences, Holy Bibles and other Holy books.

You know, normally I try and be a ‘tolerant’ fellow but how am I to view people that burn churches down on the rumor a “Christian teenager had thrown pages of the Holy Quran in a dustbin”? People which riot and murder others over friggin’ cartoons? Charming folks which celebrate kidnappings, tortures, be-headings, homicide bombings, etc., all in the name of God? We used to call such people “savages” but I suppose that’s not very politically-correct nowadays. Yet I must say I’m a bit stumped as to what else to say about them…

Police reports said 42 people have been arrested in the city of Maiduguri, capital city of Borneo state and the scene of Saturday’s riots. Soldiers have been deployed amid fears that rioters could regroup or strike in another city in Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north.

“Figures of arrests have been contradictory. While some said 30 were arrested, others put the figure at close to 100. A Christian policeman and a pastor are hiding in our house now,” he said.

“We are lucky that our landlord, an indigenous ethnic Kanuri, is a liberal Muslim and chose to still accommodate us,” he added.

Most of the victims of Saturday’s violence were Christians or other non-Muslims.

Rioters razed 18 churches during the protests and at least 17 houses were set alight. A Catholic priest was among the victims. “We lost one priest to the riot. His name is the Reverend Father Michael Ejere. He was killed and burnt,” Reverend Father Peter Maidugu told AFP from the city of Maiduguri.

De Gateway Pundit:

“One group threw a tyre around one man, poured gas on him and set him ablaze.”
-
BBC-

The AP is reporting that 15 churches were burned in the mainly Muslim region.

The rioting Muslims stormed through the streets for three hours before police restored order:

It was the first major protest to erupt over the issue in Africa’s most populous nation. An Associated Press reporter saw mobs of Muslim protesters swarm through the city center with machetes, sticks and iron rods. One group threw a tire around a man, poured gas on him and set him ablaze…

Thousands of rioters burned 15 churches in Maiduguri in a three-hour rampage before troops and police reinforcements restored order, Nigerian police spokesman Haz Iwendi said. Iwendi said security forces arrested dozens of people in the city about 1,000 miles northeast of the capital, Lagos.

Chima Ezeoke, a Christian Maiduguri resident, said protesters attacked and looted shops owned by minority Christians, most of them with origins in the country’s south.

Most of the dead were Christians beaten to death on the streets by the rioters,” Ezeoke said.[...]

One that I missed. On Monday Swedish Internet provider Spray shutdown the website of feminist publisher Alida for publishing those sinister Mohammad pictures. As a private company, this is, of course, their right (they claim that Säpo was in no way involved), but one cannot help thinking that such actions bode ill for the already stifled debate climate in Sweden.

[[It is] a photo of Jacques Barrot, a pig squealing contestant at the French Pig-Squealing Championships in Trie-sur-Baise’s annual festival. NeanderNews discovered this photo, taken by Bob Edme of AP, posted on an August 15, 2005 AP story seen here on MSNBC’s website.

As Gateway Pundit, Counter Terrorism Blog and others have reported Danish Imam Ahmad Abu Ladan, leader of The Islamic Society of Denmark, toured the middle east to create awareness of supposed anti-Islamic cartoons and included the above black and white photo as well as two other undocumented examples. Akhmad Akkari, spokesman of the tour, explained that the three drawings had been added to “give an insight in how hateful the atmosphere in Denmark is towards Muslims.”

Akkari claimed he does not know the origin of the three pictures. He said they had been sent anonymously to Danish Muslims. However, when Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet asked if it could talk to these Muslims, Akkari refused to reveal their identity. BBC World aired a story on 1-30-2006 showing the three non-published images and claimed they had been published in Denmarks Jyllands-Posten, these images however had never been published in Jyllands-Posten.

NeanderNews wonders if Jacques knows what he has started? A big kudos to ‘The Celtic Semite’ for this great lead.

February 7th, EkstraBladet approached Akkari at a press center to confront him with the newly discovered picture of the French pig-caller. The problem is that Akkari refuses to speak with EkstraBladet and B.T.This may sound odd – after all Islamisk Trossamfund (Islamic Society of Denmark) has constantly claimed they “internationalized” the “issue”, because they couldn’t get their point across in Denmark. But the truth is that Islamisk Trossamfund only speaks through Akkari – and Akkari is “punishing” two out of a handful Danish papers by not speaking to them.

After having waited for an hour, a reporter from Danish Television is about to “jump the queue”, but Akkari reassures him, “One moment, EkstraBladet just has something to show me, but he won’t get any comments” and then says to EkstraBladet, “show me what you’ve got”. EkstraBladet shows Akkari the image of the pig-caller, but Akkari refuses to apologize or make a comment. Akkari goes back to the reporter from Danish Television for more ego stroking

No necesitamos vuestras disculpas.

The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood announced that they would raise funds for Hamas after the international community pledged to cut aid. This will cause a very complicated problem. Muslim Brotherhood supporters are all over the world including the US. Now any money donated to the Palestinians would be considered to be directed towards a terrorist organization because Hamas is now in control of Palestine’s economy and finances.

I admit I haven’t given the issue much thought. I don’t want Hamas to get hundreds of millions of dollars, yet I don’t want to see more suffering on the average Palestinian who just wants to put food on the table. It’s a dilema. I’ll think about it and post about it later.

Well, wait a minute. I have a short term solution. Yasser Arafat left around $200 million (according to Forbes Magazine’s estimate). Why can’t Soha Arafat loosen up the bank accounts a little bit? Well, I don’t think she’ll do that. Why would she? Her husband didn’t do it to his own people.

I have a solution. Suppose they work on developing industry instead of a generation of suicide bombers? There are a lot of countries in this world that need help. Why would we support one whose main export to the world is terror? Concentrate on feeding your people and building your homes instead of funneling money to bombs.
You get what you sow.

Israel’s Cabinet on Sunday approved an immediate freeze on the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax money to the Palestinians in its first response to the takeover of the Palestinian parliament by the militant group Hamas.

The decision came a day after a new Hamas-dominated Palestinian legislature was sworn into office and tapped to form the next government. Israel had promised that relations with the Palestinians would suffer the moment that happened. More here

The fundamental job of journalists is to give you as much information as possible to make sense of the world around you. And in this story, where the entire controversy revolves around drawings, the press is suddenly coy. You can see Saddam Hussein in his underwear and members of the royal family in compromising positions. You can see Andres Serrano’s famously blasphemous photograph of a crucifix in urine, called Piss Christ. But a political cartoon that deals with Islam? Not our job, guv. Move right along. Nothing to see here.

If you think that’s damning, you haven’t read his conclusion:

Yes, in this new war of freedom versus fundamentalism I always anticipated appeasement. I just didn’t expect the press to be among the first to wave the white flag.

John Howard has strongly criticised aspects of Muslim culture, warning they pose an unprecedented challenge for Australia’s immigration program. While he remained confident that the overwhelming majority of Muslims would be successfully integrated, the Prime Minister said there were two unique problems that previous intakes of migrants from Europe and Asia did not have. “I do think there is this particular complication because there is a fragment which is utterly antagonistic to our kind of society, and that is a difficulty,” Mr Howard told The Australian. “You can’t find any equivalent in Italian, or Greek, or [Christian] Lebanese, or Chinese or Baltic immigration to Australia. There is no equivalent of raving on about jihad, but that is the major problem.”

The Prime Minister also expressed concern about Muslim attitudes to women. “I think some of the associated attitudes towards women (are) a problem,” he said. “For all the conservatism towards women and so forth within some of the Mediterranean cultures, it’s as nothing compared with some of the more extreme attitudes. “The second one of those things is a broader problem, but to be fair to them, it’s an attitude that is changing with the younger ones.”

El 40% de los musulmanes quieren la sharia

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 20/febrero/2006

Me entero en IBA:

Four out of 10 British Muslims want sharia law introduced into parts of the country, a survey reveals today.

The ICM opinion poll also indicates that a fifth have sympathy with the “feelings and motives” of the suicide bombers who attacked London last July 7, killing 52 people, although 99 per cent thought the bombers were wrong to carry out the atrocity.

50pc said interracial relations were worsening.

Overall, the findings depict a Muslim community becoming more radical and feeling more alienated from mainstream society, even though 91 per cent still say they feel loyal to Britain.

The results of the poll, conducted for the Sunday Telegraph, came as thousands of Muslims staged a fresh protest in London yesterday against the publication of cartoons of Mohammed. In Libya, at least 10 people died in protests linked to the caricatures.

[...]Mr Khan, the MP for Tooting, said: “We must redouble our efforts to bring Muslims on board with the mainstream community. For all the efforts made since last July, things do not have appear to have got better.”

He agreed with Sir Iqbal that the poll showed Muslims still had a “big gripe” about foreign policy, particularly over the war on terror and Iraq.

The Muslims have won: “For the past two weeks, Patrick Sookhdeo has been canvassing the opinions of Muslim clerics in Britain on the row over the cartoons featuring images of Mohammed that were first published in Denmark and then reprinted in several other European countries. “They think they have won the debate,” he says with a sigh. “They believe that the British Government has capitulated to them, because it feared the consequences if it did not. “The cartoons, you see, have not been published in this country, and the Government has been very critical of those countries in which they were published. To many of the Islamic clerics, that’s a clear victory. “It’s confirmation of what they believe to be a familiar pattern: if spokesmen for British Muslims threaten what they call ‘adverse consequences’ – violence to the rest of us – then the British Government will cave in. I think it is a very dangerous precedent.” Dr Sookhdeo adds that he believes that “in a decade, you will see parts of English cities which are controlled by Muslim clerics and which follow, not the common law, but aspects of Muslim sharia law“.
