(Updated 2/27/06) Saudi security forces have foiled an apparant suicide car bomb attack on a major oil production facility in Abqaiq (45 miles southwest of Damman, also known as Buqayq), according to BBC News. The cars carried the logo for Aramco, which is headquartered in nearby Dhahran.

De tal palo tal astilla

Jailed cleric Abu Hamza’s terrorist son is spreading words of hate — as a rapper.
Mohammed Kamel Mostafa’s song lyrics rant about waging Jihad (holy war) and carrying weapons, and praise banned Middle East terrorist groups Hezbollah and Hamas.
In one he raps: “I was born to be a soldier, Kalashnikov in my shoulder, peace to Hamas and Hezbollah, that’s the way of the lord Allah . . . we’re Jihad through, defend my religion with the holy sword.” He also sings of his Islamic “brothers” who vowed to die for Allah.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the United States and Israel on Thursday for the destruction of a Shiite shrine’s golden dome in Iraq, saying it was the work of “defeated Zionists and occupiers.”
Speaking to a crowd of thousands on a tour of southwestern Iran, the president referred to the destruction of the Askariya mosque dome in Samarra on Wednesday, which the Iraqi government has blamed on insurgents.
“They invade the shrine and bomb there because they oppose God and justice,” Ahmadinejad said, referring to the U.S.-led multinational forces in Iraq.
“These passive activities are the acts of a group of defeated Zionists and occupiers who intended to hit our emotions,” he said in a speech that was broadcast on state television. Addressing the United States, he added: “You have to know that such an act will not save you from the anger of Muslim nations.”

Sobre las ADM de Saddam

Very interesting storyfrom Investors.com of all places. Hint, hint – where are you mainstream media? Apparently Saddam Hussein had made tapes of conservations he had in his presidential office where he discussed such things as programs of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons.

Inconveniently for critics of the war, Saddam made tapes in his version of the Oval Office. These tapes landed in the hands of American intelligence and were recently aired publicly. The first 12 hours of the tapes there are hundreds more waiting to be translated are damning, to say the least. They show conclusively that Bush didn’t lie when he cited Saddam’s WMD plans as one of the big reasons for taking the dictator out.Nobody disputes the tapes’ authenticity. On them, Saddam talks openly of programs involving biological, chemical and, yes, nuclear weapons.

Now I’ll be the first to admit that Bush is far from perfect. In fact, I have many Republican friends in the US who vehemently oppose the president on various issues including illegal aliens. But one of the points of contention of the anti-war crowd is that Bush lied which of course is ridiculous. We can argue til the cows come home about whether invading Iraq was the proper course of action or not (personally I believe Iran posed and still poses the greatest threat) but he certainly didn’t lie about his reasons for doing it. He acted on the intelligence given him. Don’t forget that even Clinton and the Democrats agreed with him at the time.

Irak: los espías alemanes siguen dando guerra

It looks like the EU is ready to cave in.

France and the European Commission are leading a diplomatic drive to unblock £23 million in EU funding for the Palestinian Authority, without waiting for Hamas to renounce violence or recognise Israel.

I wonder how much this has to do with the recent cartoon furor?

“In spite of PA pledges not to incite, an interview broadcast last week
featured the mother of Wafa Al-Bas, the 21-year-old Arab woman from
Gaza who was arrested at the Erez Crossing in June 2005 wearing a
20-pound (9 kg) bomb under her clothes.

The PA TV interview with Al-Bas’ parents, which aired on February
20th, features her mother saying the event was hard for her – not
because her daughter was on a suicide mission, but because she was arrested on her way to carry it out
.

Al-Bas intended to bomb Be’er Sheva’s Soroka Hospital outpatient
clinic, where she had been receiving regular treatments for serious
burns on 45 percent of her body resulting from a gas stove explosion in
her home.

The failed bomber later told Israeli television that her greatest
wish was to kill 30 to 50 Israelis, including children. The hospital attack would likely have killed or maimed the very Israeli doctor who had saved her life
.”

Posted by Chess en 27/febrero/2006

Posted by Chess en 27/febrero/2006

Algunas recomendaciones

Anne Barth, a French social worker in Schiltigheim (suburb of Strasbourg), was victim of an anti-Semitic attack on Friday morning. At 10AM, two men entered the medical center where she works and asked her if she was called Anne Barth. She was then hit and had her head slammed against a table. The attackers then wrote the word “Mohamed” on her stomach and scrawled “dirty Jew” on the wall before they fled. The victim is not, in fact, Jewish. Police indicate that the attackers were “d’origine maghrébine” (just an other way for the French authorities to say French without actually using the word — [désolé, bande de pédés, ces animaux sont 100% fwançais pur porc, faudrait l'assumer.]).

HT: No Pasarán.

No longer able to deny or play down the racial motive, the investigation is entering a new phase. One of the most troubling aspects of this affair is the probable involvement of relatives and neighbors, beyond the immediate circle of the gang, who were told about the Jewish hostage and dropped in to participate in the torture.
[...] Ilan’s uncle Rafi Halimi told reporters that the gang phoned the family on several occasions and made them listen to the recitation of verses from the Quran, while Ilan’s tortured screams could be heard in the background.

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy revealed that house-searches of suspects related to the brutal murder and torture of a yong Jewish man, 23-year-old Ilan Halimi, produced Salafi (radical Islamic) and pro-Palestinian documents.According to Sarkozy, documents of support for the Comité de bienfaisance et de secours aux Palestiniens (CBSP) were uncovered. The organization is accused by Israel and the US of sponsoring Hamas. Though the US ordered in 2003 that its assets be frozen, the CBSP is not featured on European lists of organizations considered to be terrorist. The other documents found in the house-searches were described by Sarkozy as Salafi decrees. The French government considers the murder to be an anti-Semitic crime.

Lorleach, whose computer-generated picture appeared in newspapers, gave herself up to police Thursday after a friend, Murielle Izourad, also 24, recognised her.She is reported to have provided the investigators with “significant” information. “This young girl was very brave in turning herslf in because she was horrified by what happened,” her lawyer Jean Balan said.He claimed she had got involved because she was “in love with one of the gang members” now being held.

She is said to have told police she picked up young men but did not know what then happened to them.

According to the Paris prosector’s office her role was to act as bait for two victims but having failed to do so was sidelined.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

London, Feb. 25 – Iranians were surprised to see that the Persian translation of this year’s “The World’s 10 Worst Dictators” published in the New York-based weekly Parade contained only nine names. Who was missing?

Iran’s state-run news agency ILNA carried a report on the list of authoritarian rulers published by the magazine, but the agency deliberately removed the name of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, from the list.

Parade’s list says that Khamenei has “shut down the free press, tortured journalists and ordered the execution of homosexual males”.

“Over the past four years, the rulers of Iran have undone the reforms that were emerging in the nation”.

Khamenei was a new entry in the Top 10, up nine points from his previous standing.

In a report on Khamenei’s role in the Iranian theocracy in December 2004, the U.S.-based Committee on the Present Danger wrote, “In addition to its peace-threatening nuclear program, Iran under Khamenei continues to be the world’s foremost state supporter of terrorism… He is seeking regional hegemony, both ideologically and militarily. His growing oil wealth increases his capacity for wreaking havoc on his own people and the region.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

Lahore (AsiaNews) – The move to rob a famous Christian singer in Pakistan became an attempt of forced conversion to Islam. The incident took place on 18 February in Lahore, Punjab. When he was returning home at night, the Christian, A. Nayyar, was stopped by six men who wanted to rob him. When the criminals recognized him, however, they started to beat and insult him, demanding that he recite the Salama-Tayyaba, the Islamic profession of faith.

After they robbed and injured him, the assailants fled, leaving Nayyar on the ground. Residents of the area, who had heard shouting, went to help the singer.

The singer, according to the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) – an organ of the Pakistani Church tackling human rights – has no intention of taking legal action against the as yet unidentified perpetrators. According to Waseem Muntazir, a friend of the singer, they were amateur criminals, because otherwise “they would have done much more”.

Nayyar, who performs many national songs apart from Christian lyrics, is very popular among Muslims too.

After the incident, the NCJP wrote a letter to the Religious and Minority Affairs Minister, calling on him to tackle such episodes and to seek to educate the people in religious respect.

Tom y Jerry, conspiradores

On February 19, 2006, Iranian TV channel 4 covered a film seminar that included a lecture by Professor Hasan Bolkhari. In addition to being a member of the Film Council of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Bolkhari is a cultural advisor to the Iranian Education Ministry, and active on behalf of interfaith issues.
Hasan Bolkhari: There is a cartoon that children like. They like it very much, and so do adults – Tom and Jerry.
[...]Some say that this creation by Walt Disney will be remembered forever. The Jewish Walt Disney Company gained international fame with this cartoon. It is still shown throughout the world. This cartoon maintains its status because of the cute antics of the cat and mouse — especially the mouse.
Watch Schindler’s List. Every Jew was forced to wear a yellow star on his clothing. The Jews were degraded and termed “dirty mice.” Tom and Jerry was made in order to change the Europeans’ perception of mice. One of terms used was “dirty mice.”
I’d like to tell you that… It should be noted that mice are very cunning…and dirty.
[...] No ethnic group or people operates in such a clandestine manner as the Jews.
[...]Read the history of the Jews in Europe. This ultimately led to Hitler’s hatred and resentment. As it turns out, Hitler had behind-the-scene connections with the Protocols [of the Elders of Zion].

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

“The truth of the matter is you don’t have to run the cartoons. It’s not necessarily censorship. It’s maybe just saying, ‘It’s a little hot right now – let’s not push those issues.‘ Look, I’m a freedom of speech guy. I grew up, you know, I’m the son of an anchor guy so I believe you should be able to say anything.”
Except when things get “a little hot”, obviously.
“The New York Times – that’s where we get our straightest news from.”
Ha ha ha ha!
“Sanctions and inspectors were working.”
Yes I suppose they were, in a UN multi-billion dollar fraud kind of way.
And of course, they played the clip from Good Night and Good Luck that nearly every other BBC programme seems to have shown over the past week where Ed Murrow says:
We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.
The irony is that those now lauding Murrow’s legend are the very same people who have deserted freedom by censoring themselves in the face of threats.

Clooney, who has weathered attacks since opposing the 2003 Iraq invasion, said at one point that it was “frustrating” to be listed as a “traitor” on a set of playing cards, but he also accepted people’s right to free speech.
He later admitted he relished the attacks.
“I think it’s important to be on the right side of history,” Clooney said.
“I want to be on that deck of cards. And I want to be able to say that they boycotted my films… I want to be able to say I was on the cover of a magazine called a ‘traitor,”‘ he said.
“I’m proud of those because those were badges of honour for me because that was when you did it when it was hard to do,” the actor and director said.

USA continuará dando ayuda al pueblo palestino

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat Saturday said the U.S. pledged to continue financial support for the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) though the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) would lead a new Palestinian government.

Erekat told reporters following a meeting in Ramallah with visiting deputy US Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs David Welsh.

The meeting was the first high-level U.S.-Palestinian contact since Hamas, whose charter calls for destruction of Israel, scored a landslide victory in Palestinian Parliamentary elections last month.

Welsh is also scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later on Saturday, according to Palestinian and Israeli sources.

The U.S. official is also expected to meet with Israeli officials on Sunday, said the sources.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

ROME: Senior politicians in Italy’s government launched a policy manifesto on Thursday vowing to protect Western civilization from what they said were the twin threats of Islamic fundamentalism and a moral vacuum.Marcello Pera, speaker of the Senate and a friend of Pope Benedict, said people in the West were ashamed to stand up for their values and often blamed themselves for being victims of terrorism. “The West has difficulty recognizing itself,” Pera told a news conference to launch the manifesto. “As Pope Benedict said: ‘the West doesn’t love itself any more’,” he said.

The document, entitled “For the West, Force of Civilization”, begins: “The West is in crisis. Attacked externally by fundamentalism and Islamic terrorism, it is not able to rise to the challenge. Undermined internally by a moral and spiritual crisis, it can’t seem to find the courage to react.”

La “islamificación” del baloncesto femenino

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

“…[T]he girls can’t accept that they have only been allowed to compete against girls basketball teams from other Muslim schools. There are only four in the Chicago area, they complain, and their competition isn’t exactly tough.

“Since last year they’ve been beseeching Coach Farida Abusafa, 26, an English teacher who also coaches sports, to ask public schools and non-Muslim private schools if their girls teams would be willing to compete against girls from the Universal School.

The problem is the schools would have to agree to bar men and boys above the age of puberty from watching the games.

“‘It’s not like it’s a sin to play a public school,’ Abusafa said. ‘The problem is the males coming to the game.’

“The dilemma underscores the balancing act many Muslims perform as they toggle between American and Middle Eastern culture….

“Conceivably, the Muslim girls could play in headscarves, sweat pants and long sleeves. But the bulky attire might make playing difficult, they said….”

Del Chicago Tribune, via Always On Watch.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

Lo leo en A Western Heart:

“One of New South Wales’s most senior detectives has warned Cronulla’s rioters they have a week to come forward or face being hunted through the national media. Strike force Enoggera has already arrested 54 people in connection with the December 11 riot and the reprisals that followed. Enoggera boss Superintendent Ken McKay yesterday revealed he has another 50 in his sights. If they do not give themselves up in the next seven to 10 days, 25 of those will find their faces splashed across the national media. The blunt warning came after police announced 10 more arrests – seven yesterday in dawn raids across southwestern Sydney. These seven people of Middle Eastern appearance, aged 19 to 23, allegedly pelted police and ambulance officers with rocks and projectiles at Hashem’s car park in Brighton-le-Sands on the night of December 11. Supt McKay vowed those whose pictures will be released will be identified and arrested.

Pero los ataques no cesan:

Two men are being questioned over an attack on a man in Melbourne’s CBD this morning. The men were arrested early this afternoon but have not been charged, police said. The alleged attack involved a group of men kicking an unconscious man, 26, as he lay in the gutter. A second man tried to intervene but the group then turned on him, police said. Doctors today operated on an injury to his hand. The first victim was taken from St Vincent’s Hospital by his parents before doctors could treat him, hospital spokesman Mike Griffin said. Mr Griffin said the victim was conscious when he arrived at hospital, but was believed to have been unconscious for two or three minutes during the attack. The attack happened on Elizabeth Street, south of Little Bourke Street, about 6am (AEDT) today. Members of the group were described by police as being of Middle-Eastern appearance and left the scene in a yellow car.

La web IranFocus.com, hackeada desde Teherán

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 26/febrero/2006

London, Feb 24 – A four-week investigation into serious malfunctions in the Iran Focus news site has revealed that the website was the victim of malicious cyber attacks from Tehran, the website’s co-director Javid Akbari said.

Following several spates of irregular service in Iran Focus, the technical department carried out a review of the site’s structural integrity and outside influences to discover possible cause of the disruption in service.

The source of the attacks was difficult to trace as they were occurring in irregular patterns and at times via interim platforms, but after lengthy investigations, it was discovered that several IPs were systematically carrying out DOS (Denial of Service) attacks on the site to disrupt services.

In less than two years, Iran Focus has established itself as a leading source of news and information on Iran and has become the Internet’s most popular English-language website on Iranian news.

Noticia de NewsBusters a través de Custos Fidei.

UPDATE/ACTUALIZACIÓN:

Pepe has provided this link to a story in the Register that says that Yahoo, in fact, unbanned “Allah” after this story got out. According to Yahoo, “‘Allah’ was one word being used for [hateful] purposes, with instances tied to defamatory language.” Therefore, Yahoo banned the word themselves and not, it appears, at the behest of the mad mullahs of Andrew Sullivan’s nightmares. Still, at the time of Sullivan’s post, his research would have confirmed Callahan’s story. Correction noted. The assumption that Yahoo’s decision was indicative of some world-wide conspiracy to placate Islamic fundamentalists was, alas, his own leap of “faith.”

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 25/febrero/2006

¿La razón? Hmm, la entrada en la UE:

Turkey demands official Danish apology for the Muhammed cartoons. Jens Rohde, the political spokesman for the ruling Liberal Party thinks the demand hurts Turkey’s chances of EU membership.

The Danish government must distance itself from the Muhammed cartoons published in Jyllands-Posten and make an apology. Otherwise, no bridge-building with the Islamic world is possible, says the official spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry followingthe European Unions’ request for Turkey to act as a mediator.

“The Danish government ought quickly to announce that Denmark does not accept denigration of the Prophet Muhammed such as the cartoons in Jyllands-Posten gives voice to. Denmark should apologize for what’s happened and make it clear that the Danish government wants nothing to do with the cartoons.” So says Namik Tan, official spokesman of Abdullah Gül, foreign minister of Turkey.

He underlines that in the opinion of the Turkish government the cartoons have nothing to do with Freedom of Speech.

“This issue is not about Freedom of Speech. This is no different than if these cartoons had anti-semitic content. If Denmark persists in insisting that this is about Freedom of Speech, it will be very difficult to proceed,” Tan is quoted as saying.

Long way to the EU

The spokesman of the Liberal ruling party, Jens Rohde, condemns the statement, saying that this will only make it more difficult for Turkey to act as a mediator and it will not be helpful if they want to be accepted into the EU.

In Denmark, the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press are not up for negotiation,” he said during his weekly media briefing.

Later in the day, Abdullah Gül, FM of Turkey says this to a DR reporter:

He could say that: “Definitely there is a freedom press in my country. But at the same time we are not happy with these cartoons. We are not happy to see that these cartoons are insulting to others. So the freedom of press doesn’t mean that insulting to others’ identity or religion.”

So this man is supposed to mediate for us? That might be fine if he was the pope and anti-Danish statements weren’t leaking from his Ministry like spunk from a freshly fucked goat (no relation, I’m sure).

On with the story, the Ambassador to Denmark of Turkey on Deadline, a Danish news program, says of the Turkish position on a Danish apology:

The Turkish government does not wish to revisit this aspect of the question. And we think that we should be looking into the future, we should be trying to find ways and means to defuse the crisis and should exert all our efforts in that direction.

[…]We think that we… I think that my answer is clear. We think we should just look at the ways to defuse this crisis right now and move on in that direction. I think it is quite obvious.

Pressed by the host, the Ambassador says this:

No, I am saying that we have never made such a request. We did not make a request.

No you didn’t, the government would have known about such a request immediately. But a ‘high-ranking official’ of yours – in fact as high ranking as they get below the level of ministers – leaked that you think Denmark should apologize. And when you were confronted with this, you didn’t deny it. You did the weasel-dance. Evaded responsibility. Watching that ambassador evade the question may be the most lying show I have seen since the Clinton tapes.

Ikea apoya la subyugación femenina

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 25/febrero/2006

Del blog cdr salamander:

When IKEA first approached TheHijabShop.com, their excited team was impressed that an internationally-acclaimed company like IKEA was making so much effort to accommodate Muslims in its workforce. (…) The IKEA branding was added by using a navy blue coloured cloth, with a thin yellow line bordering the top of the cap and the edge of the bottom part of the hijab, finishing it off with the IKEA logo embroidered on the back.

Posted by Spanish Eowyn en 25/febrero/2006

Muy interesante este post de BBC-Biased:

I don’t take any pleasure in repeating the same stuff again and again. Trouble is the BBC keeps doing the same stuff again and again and I sort of feel obliged. So I’ll just repeat words frommy earlier postas often as need be.

If the religion of the victim is relevant to understanding the crime, then so is the religion of the perpetrator. The BBC would not dream of leaving it unmentioned when a religious or religious/political hate crime is carried out by a Jew. The BBC had no trouble sayingAsher Weisganwas Jewish, and no trouble quoting the view of a commenter that Weisgan’s murder of four Arabs was the “wild grapes produced by Israel’s extreme right.” The BBC had no trouble mentioning the Jewish skullcap worn byEden Nathan Zaadaas he killed Israeli Arabs on a bus, and no trouble reporting on his extremist political views.

Yet all that the BBC gives us about Yussef Fofana is his name.

The BBC’s longstanding reluctance to even mention that most modern European anti-Jewish violence is carried out by Muslims, let alone discuss it, has made a small but dishonourable contribution to the legitimisation and normalisation of such violence.

Sensibilidad

Algunas recomendaciones

Gangs of pro-Muslim computer hackers have unleashed a withering cyber attack on Danish and Western websites in the past week, escalating their defacement barrage to coincide with dozens of violent street-level demonstrations across the Arab world in protest at the publication of a cartoon depiction of the Prophet Mohammed.

The victims of the cyber attacks ran the gamut of large and small websites, from estate agents in Essex to a Danish online gamer community called the 47th Royal Marines. As of Tuesday morning, the latter’s site was still defaced to read ‘Hacked by RedHackeR” with the following statement: “IM SORRY, STOP WAR, DON’T TOUCH ALL ISLAM COUNTRY! F[***] DENMARK, F[***] YOUR GOVERMENT!!!’ (via Fu2rman)

Al respecto decía The Counterterrorism Blog:

An article yesterday on Britain’s “Computer Shopper” website caught my eye. It discussed the assault of Danish and other Western websites by gangs of Muslim hackers. “The number of Danish websites alone – those carrying a ‘.dk’ suffix – knocked offline in the past week numbered 578 between 30 January and 6 February, according to Zone-H.org, a cyber-crime observatory that tracks website defacements. Hundreds more websites of European, Israeli and American companies and private citizens have also been defaced during that period, with the vast majority occurring after the re-publication last week of the cartoons in European newspapers.”

This morning, I received an e-mail from CT Blog fan Ms. Tracy Twyman in Portland, OR, in response to my report yesterday about a hacking of a Seattle-area website by Muslim cyber-terrorists (that’s what I’m calling you, get used to it) – quoting her below with edits for the links:

“Thanks for covering the story about the cyberterrorists. If you’re keeping a list, you might like to know that my websites, Dragon Key Press and Plus Ultra Blog, were hacked about 1 and a half weeks ago, because I was republishing the Mohammed cartoons, as well as other incindiary material. Both websites were down for about a day until our web host was able to fix it. To tell you the truth, I never thought about going to the police or the FBI about it. I assumed they wouldn’t do anything.

I did come across some interesting info though. Lately my website has received frequent visits from people in Turkey clicking links to the site that have been posted on two separate forums, each of them clearly forums for Islamic cyberterrorists. They are here and here. I was not able to get into these forums to see what they were saying about my website, but I can only assume they were discussing plans of attack. I thought you might be interested in this information.”

This afternoon, a very interesting follow-up from Tracy (thanks Tracy!), which I hope will attract attention from law enforcement and ideas from other knowledgeable CT Blog fans:

“This morning, yet another person from Turkey visited plusultrablog.com from yet another Islamic hacker forum. If you go to the main page here, you can see that that’s exactly what it is.

I’ve just read your blog entry about the coordinated hacking attacks from the Islamic world. They targeted my site on the same day they targeted zombie’s. I know where they are launching one of their main attacks from. There is an Islamic hacking message forum that coordinates these attacks, apparently. I saw the IP addresses that accessed my site, and it matched those who spammed and flooded my site. My site was offline for 5 hours 2 days ago, and 3 hours yesterday… 2 hours today. Fortunately my host has been very helpful and we have inserted those malignant IP’s into our firewall. So far so good… Anyway, here is the site that has been coordinating attacks against the Mohammed Image Archive.

If you read Arabic and want a degree in jihad, click on www.al-farouq.com/vb/. If you’re lucky–the site disappears and reappears–you will see a post that belongs to the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF). It announces the “Al Qaeda University of Jihad Studies.” According to Ahmad al-Wathiq Billah, the GIMF “Deputy General Emir,” students “pass through faculties devoted to the cause of the caliphate through morale boosting and bombings,” and the site offers specialization in “electronic, media, spiritual and financial jihad.”

The Internet has long been essential for terrorism, but what has surprised experts is the growth of such Islamist (radical Islam) and jihadist sites. Their continuing rise suggests that recruitment for a “holy war” against the West could proceed unabated, despite capture of key leaders.

  • The Guardian reported that Iranian negotiators headed home after the first day of an expected two day negotiation session in Moscow.
  • The Financial Times reported that Tehran vowed to pursue nuclear research.
  • Adnkronos International Iran’s foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced on Tuesday. “The phase of negotiations with the EU trio is over.”
  • Times Online reported that Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Russian Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said: “Unfortunately, Iran so far has not shown sufficient good will.”
  • Malaysia Star reported that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said: “China hopes Iran will restore suspension of all activities relating to uranium enrichment.”
  • The Wall Street Journal warned that the West, it seems, is now putting its future security in the hands of Russia and China.

This report illustrates an apparent intensification of repression over the past six months since the President took office, which includes frequent use of the death penalty and torture, persecution of ethnic and religious minorities and limitations on freedom of speech.

Amnesty International regularly receives new reports of torture and ill treatment of detainees where the denial of medical treatment is increasingly common. The human rights organization is extremely concerned for the safety of journalist Elham Afroutan who has been held incommunicado since 29 January 2006 amid unconfirmed reports that she may be in a coma or may have died while in custody (see also “Concern for Journalist Elham Afroutan“).

(Complete report)

  • Iran Press News reported that Elham Afroutan’s father is saying his daughter has not committed suicide and spoke to him last Friday, despite government reports to the contrary.
  • Iran Press News reported that political prisoner journalist, Mostafa Jowkar who was transferred to a hospital due to complications from heart disease, was returned to Evin prison without proper medical care.
  • Iran Press News reported that 11 regime murderers were present at the despicable execution of political prisoner, Hodjat Zamani. After Zamani’s brutal execution the authorities refused to release his body to his family; the Zamani family, in this time of mourning was therefore forced to appeal to the revolutionary court in order to obtain their sons body for a proper burial. In further cruelty, the revolutionary court has claimed no knowledge of Zamani’s execution and have told the Zamani family to come back in 3 days so that they can investigate the situation and see what if any information or date of release can be given to them.
  • Rooz Online reported on the increasing number of executions of dissidents in Iran whose backgrounds range from political activism to young women, children, and men.
  • Journalist and blogger Ahmad Reza Shiri (Persian) will have a permanent threat hanging over him as a result of the suspended sentence (used to silence journalists who bother the authorities) of three years in prison handed down by a court in the northern city of Mashhad, Reporters Without Borders said today. He was reportedly accused of writing articles in his blog calling for a boycott of last February’s legislative elections.

International Women’s Day in Tehran
to fight for our freedom from under the rule of the misogynist Mullahs
Date: March 8th, 2006
Time: 16:30 p.m.
Place: Laleh Park, Tehran

Y la lucha del poder se sucede:

  • Rooz Online reported that it was discovered that followers of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi had occupied the Sufi temple and had turned it into a surveillance station to spy and eavesdrop on the grand ayatollahs of Qom, prior to the Sufi’s temporary retaking of the temple.

Eso sí:

  • Piden que se financie a Hamas: The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran’s supreme leader called on Muslim nations to provide annual financial aid to a Hamas-led Palestinian government (Arabia Saudí en seguida les ha hecho caso). En Yahoo News: “The only way to succeed is to continue resistance against the occupier regime,” said Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters and who dominates Iran’s policy on the Middle East conflict. “Palestinian people knew that their vote for Hamas meant the fight against the Zionist occupier regime,” Khamenei said.

  • Stratfor reported on Iran’s efforts to create strategic partners in South America.”Cuban National Assembly President Ricardo Alarcon received Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel, speaker of Iran’s parliament, Feb. 16 in Havana. Haddad-Adel had just come from signing a memorandum of understanding on the peaceful use of nuclear energy in Caracas, Venezuela, on Feb. 14, and will be wrapping up his tour through Latin America with visits to Uruguay and Brazil“.

Coaliton for Darfur publishes BBC Monitoring’s text [no date] of a report by Sudanese newspaper Alwan claiming Iran says “No” to foreign meddling in Darfur. In a press conference held at the Hilton hotel [in Khartoum] yesterday morning, he urged to end foreign interference in Darfur and let the Sudanese government work towards resolving the issue in a suitable way. He further reiterated Iran’s support for a Sudanese solution in this regard, and his trust in the mediation of the AU member states to resolve the crisis.” (via Tehran Watch)

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday pledged his country’s support for Iran’s position on peaceful use of nuclear technology. Iranian Deputy President Ahmed Moussawi, who arrived in Khartoum earlier Wednesday on an official visit to Sudan, delivered a letter to the Sudanese president from his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmedinejad concerning the position of the Iranian authority toward its nuclear file and its right topeaceful use of nuclear energy, the Sudanese news agency reported.
